Stitching and Snipping

Farewell for the weekend! Miriam Hart is coming over tonight and will stay for the weekend to sew! I'll be showing her how to use the machine, and helping her understand patterns, and hopefully we'll have two new dresses by the time we're done! We're making an old-English type looking dress, with 3/4 length sleeves with lace, a long flowy skirt, and a square necked bodice with lace. We had to get the Simplicity costume pattern, since like Elijah said, "You're so old-fashioned, you have to sew your dresses from costume patterns!" :-)

I can't wait to sew with Miriam for a few days! Hope you all have a blessed weekend! I know mine will be fun, as I stich seams and snip threads...

That's funny. My mom laughs when I buy patterns from the costume section too :).

Oooh, I'd love to see pictures when you're done with them! I haven't yet bought a pattern from the costume section to wear...but I love looking through that part of the catalog and wishing! Do you (and you, Susan) wear the "costume" dresses in public? Sorry if that's a weird question...I just was wondering! I'd love to wear clothes like those from "the olden days", but I already look weird enough that I don't think the costume-y look would be good!

    Jessica,
I haven't actually made an "authentic" costume to wear on a daily basis yet (I have a few projects in my plans), though I've made clothing that harkens back to the olden days :). My family jokes that some of my wardrobe looks like it belongs in a prairie town. I try to wear more of a "classic" look most of the time.

Hi all! I'll respond more later, but Ashley, I'm glad you found my blog! If you want to email me, you can find my email address in my profile. I'd love to hear from you! It's neat that you're going to Ballet Magnificat's intensive as well! I'll write more later, but we must get back to sewing...

Thanks for the reply, Susan...I know what you mean about trying to wear a "classic" look...that's what I try to do too. But then I watch a period film like Pride and Prejudice or Anne of Avonlea or Little Women, or I look at the dresses and patterns www.sensibility.com and then I'm just itching to make a "beautiful dress" and wear it no matter how many weird looks I get! Maybe one day I actually will...OH WHY, oh why doesn't the world dress like it did 150 years ago?! The trials of a skirted maiden who dreams of beautiful gowns...

Go ahead and make a fun dress Jessica! They make good formal occassion dresses, and they're so fun to wear! I feel the same way after watching old movies! Miriam and I plan to wear our dresses for my brother's graduation celebration, then again for our fall solo and ensemble concert. Plus, whenever else we feel like it! Yes, we look different, but it's fun!!
